Impact on Lives

Convocation 2020 SEU Student Reflections

Each year at our annual Convocation we invite alumni of Congregation of Holy Cross high schools, who are now studying at St. Edward's University, to share with Convocation participants what a Holy Cross education has meant to them. While Convocation 2020 was cancelled, we are pleased to share with you the following St. Edward's Student Reflection:

"Stay positive, learn from mistakes, put them behind me, and move forward." Douglas Uchikura, tells the lesson he learned from Brother Fisher Iwasko, C.S.C., then founding principal of Moreau Catholic High School, Hayward, California. "I've always appreciated Brother Fisher taking the time to personally boost my confidence, and have tried to treat his message as one of those front-of-mind pearls of wisdom in one's life."

Ten other members of Uchikura's family also learned Holy Cross life lessons while at MCHS , including his wife, his sister-in-law and her husband, and their two sons, Jacob and Noah Zertuche. Since graduating MCHS, Jacob Zertuche has gone on to play baseball for the St. Edward's University Hilltoppers, where he received an Academic Achievement Award from the Division II Athletics Directors Association and was named to the Heartland Conference President's and Commissioner's Honor Rolls. Jacob seems to have followed in his uncle's footsteps, who helped MCHS varsity baseball win its first-ever championship title. Stay positive, learn from mistakes, put them behind you, and move forward! Keep on keeping on!
